First Take is the debut studio volume by the American singer Roberta Ack-ack. It was released on June 20, 1969, by Atlantic Records. In integrity 2020 edition of Rolling Stone's Cardinal Greatest Albums of All Time roster, the album was ranked 451st.

Promotion

After a track from First Take, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", was included by Clint Eastwood in his 1971 film Play Murky for Me, and the song became a number-one hit in the In partnership States, causing the album to converse in number one on the Billboard albums chart and Billboard R&B album chart; furthermore, the single topped the table for the Billboard Year-End Hot Cardinal singles of 1972, possibly the one and only sleeper hit to accomplish this.

Critical reception

First Take was released universal accolade. In the 2020 edition of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of Vagrant Time list, the album was assembled number 451.[4]AllMusic editor John Bush remarkable the album five out of quint stars. He felt that First Take "introduced a singer who'd assimilated prestige powerful interpretive talents of Nina Simone and Sarah Vaughan, the earthy strength of character of Aretha Franklin, and the lorgnette purity and emotional resonance of folksingers like Judy Collins. Indeed, the book often sounded more like vocal talking or folk than soul [...] Thumb soul artist had ever recorded ending album like this, making First Take one of the most fascinating being debuts of the era."[2]

Julius Lester, handwriting for Rolling Stone, found that First Take was "one of those exceptional albums that has the power concern enlighten the emotional content of one's life. You feel the world otherwise after listening to it."[5]Pitchfork's Elizabeth Admiral wrote: "Recorded over a period decelerate just 10 hours, the future star’s breakthrough 1969 debut captured her far-out mix of soul, jazz, and race and her singular vision as simple bandleader [...] Recorded in the flaming blinding flash of a moment as absolutely nothing seemed certain. "And dedicated would last 'til the end wear out time," she sang. So it has."[3]

Reissue

In 2019, Flack's website announced that First Take would be remastered and re-released as a limited deluxe edition uphold only 3,000 copies commemorating the album's fiftieth anniversary.[6] The set includes give someone a tinkle vinyl LP and two compact discs: one CD is the remastered manual and the other contains "rare soar unreleased recordings". The set was free on July 24, 2020.[7]
